Julia Gomelsky is a designer/art director/photographer based in Santa Monica, California.
Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, back when it was still called Leningrad, Julia emigrated to the U.S. in 1978 along with her parents and twin sister, Victoria. She discovered her interest in photography and visual arts in high school and attended San Francisco State University, graduating in 2000 with a degree in Industrial Design (with an emphasis in graphic design).
Julia's passion is design of any form. In spring of 2009, she launched Vijous (vee-zhoo), showcasing her artwork. Combining the flair of a gallery with the convenience of the Web, the site was founded as a forum to display a series of quirky doll photographs. Having grown since then to house not only the Doll Collection but also a wide selection of art/illustration (My Pet Croc) and mixed media (custom paper mache on canvas), Vijousthe name is derived from a juxtaposition of Julia and her twin sister Victoria's first namesallows art lovers to purchase original artwork, from 4x6 postcards to large wall-hanging canvases.
After working as a web designer in San Francisco and Los Angeles, Julia became Art Director for a Burbank-based entertainment company. Her minimalist style is characterized by high contrast images that celebrate the mystery and mood of black and white film. She is particularly drawn to entrances and doorways but her body of work also includes portraiture, landscape and travel photography.
